In order for individuals to engage in sexual activity of any type with each other, there must be clear consent. Consent is sexual permission—a voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity. Understanding how to talk about consent, gain consent, and refuse consent will help each person to minimize the risk of unwanted sexual contact.
The UMW “It’s On Us” Bystander intervention initiative allows students to work to reduce harm to members of their community. Awareness campaigns and prevention efforts help students to intervene when they see any behaviors such as sexual violence, risky alcohol use, illegal drug use, bullying, or harassment.
