Dear UMW Community,

The U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights released the Final Rule under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance on May 6, 2020. The new regulations (linked here: https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/newsroom.html) became effective August 14, 2020.

The University of Mary Washington is dedicated to providing a diverse, accepting, and supportive environment that holds all of its members to the highest standards of conduct, integrity, and inclusiveness. Our unwavering commitment to these values will remain steadfast as the Office of Title IX carefully reviews the new regulations and required changes.

The Prohibited Conduct Policy approved by the University’s Board of Visitors, effective August 14, 2020, reflects the required changes to ensure our policies and procedures align with new federal regulations, along with Virginia state law and our ASPIRE values  – our commitment to inclusive excellence.

The University will continue to provide comprehensive resources to help students and employees affected by sexual violence, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, and stalking, as well as other forms of sex and gender-based discrimination.
