STP Summer Peer Counselor Announcement (2024)

Submissions due by the end of the day on Friday, March 22nd

The Student Transition Program (STP) is a dynamic service designed to strengthen the recruitment, retention, and sense of belonging for first-generation, first-in-family, and geographically underrepresented students at the University of Mary Washington. STP provides engaging and inclusive opportunities that assist participants in learning strategies to navigate the academic and social rigors of college life, gain familiarization with the various campus resources available, and build connections with faculty, staff and other students.

Students selected to participate in STP begin with a free, 2-week summer residential program; the 2-week summer program always occurs during the second and third week of July. During this time students live in campus housing with other first-year students and take college-level courses. This opportunity provides a jump start to life at UMW before the initial fall semester while empowering STP participants to build community, academic and social success skills, and a better knowledge of self. Support continues during the academic year with an additional college success course for credit, individual advising, and mentorship to promote positive outcomes for student success.

Eligibility for STP requires that students be accepted to UMW and must meet at least one of the following criteria: first-generation (i.e., a member of the first generation in their family to graduate from a four-year college or university), first-in-family (i.e., the first individual in their family to go to college), or underrepresented by race, ethnicity, or the geographic location in which they come from (i.e., rural background, out-of-state).

STP is excited to provide intentional opportunities that assist students in navigating their collegiate journey at UMW and developing a path towards their academic and extracurricular goals. We look forward to welcoming you into the Eagle family!
